As I write once again it is a long hard summer for us passionate Everton fans. We wait eagerly for the first big signing of the transfer window. But spirits are lifted by the promise of some of the younger players now ready for the first team. Jack Rodwell is the name to watch. As the saying goes, if they are good enough, they are old enough. They need to be good. The Everton motto is nil satis nisi optimum – “nothing but the best is enough”. St Paul would like that. Athletes, he says, discipline their bodies, dedicate themselves to be a winner because the prize is worth everything to them. It must be tough to train every day, to commit to being the best when your mates are out doing their thing. But that’s what it takes to wear royal blue at Goodison on Saturday (or Sunday or Monday!)
