How to open zip files

This tutorial will show you how to open a zip file, one of the types of downloaded. A zip file allows us to compress articles and pictures down to a smaller size, making it quicker for you to access from your internet connection. You simply unzip the file and it's ready for use. Here's how it works...

Step one: right click on the zip file

The zip file will usually save down to your desktop. You know a file is compressed because Windows adds a zip to the folder icon. Right click on the zipped folder and click on OPEN, as circled above.

Step two: Extract all files

A new folder will open on your screen, showing you which files are contained in the Zip folder. Our example shows a suduko puzzle.

In the top left of the screen there's an option under folder tasks. It's EXTRACT ALL FILES. That's exactly what we want to do, so just click on it to activate.

Step three: Extraction wizard

A new window opens, headed 'Welcome to the compressed (zipped) folders extraction wizard'. To continue (and extract or unzip the files) click on the button marked NEXT.

Step four: Choose where to download your files to

You will be prompted by Windows to select a destination for your files to unzip to. It's usually your desktop folder, but you can choose other places such as your My Documents folder should you wish. You can always move it once it has been downloaded.

To start the extraction, click on NEXT.

Step five: Nearly done

The extraction process has finished. It usually takes seconds, depending on the speed on your computer and the size of the files. You can view the folder that the files have been extracted to by ensure the box next to the 'Show Extracted Files' option is ticked.

Then, click on the FINISH button and you're done!

Step six: Start using your files

And here's your finished download. You can see the Suduko puzzle ready for you to use in your magazine.
